Doctoral Practicum Student

Martin Smith, a highly qualified Senior Doctoral student, is committed to helping people overcome a wide range of mental health issues. With a Ph.D. in Personality and Measurement from the University of Western Ontario, Martin has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles on mental health topics, including perfectionism, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and alcohol use. Between 2019 to 2021, he worked as an assistant professor in the United Kingdom

Currently pursuing a second Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of British Columbia, Martin has completed several clinical practicums at the UBC Psychology Clinic, where he received training in evidence-based treatments for depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, life stress, and adjustment to life transitions.

At UPsilon Clinic, Martin provides individualized, evidence-based psychotherapy for a wide range of mental health problems, including anxiety, low mood, stress, low self-esteem, procrastination, and substance use issues. His expertise extends to specific anxiety and mood concerns such as social anxiety, panic attacks, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and persistent depressive disorder.

Martin’s approach to therapy is evidence-based and combines cognitive-behavioural therapy, exposure and response prevention, and motivational interviewing. He works closely with clients to identify areas of concern and to develop individualized treatment plans that cater to their specific needs. Martin is known for being warm, empathetic, knowledgeable, flexible, and compassionate.

Martin also offers evidence-based psychodiagnostic assessments for mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which come with individualized recommendations. Martin’s clinical work will be supervised by UPsilon Clinic’s Registered Psychologist, Dr. Jaleh Shahin.
